Balayage is a French word that means sweep. The hair color is painted directly on sections of the hair and is brushed down the hair shaft in soft strokes. Cotton strips are used at the base of the sections (sometimes) to keep the color separate from other hair. A saran wrap is also used to separate the sections. Why get Balayage? What is balayage?

Balayage is a hand-painted colouring technique that creates soft, natural-looking dimension, with lighter pieces where the sun would naturally catch your hair. Because the colour blends gradually from the root, it grows out softly with no harsh lines – making it one of the lowest-maintenance colour services.

Balayage, ombre or foils?

• Balayage – soft, painted, sun-kissed dimension
• Ombre – darker roots blending into lighter ends
• Foils / highlights – more defined, even brightness from the root (see hair colour & foils)

What to expect

Your stylist will discuss your goals, skin tone and maintenance before starting. Balayage often includes a toner and blow-dry, and appointments usually take around 2.5–4 hours depending on length, thickness and how much lift you want.

Keeping your balayage fresh

• Use a colour-safe or purple shampoo for blondes
• Book a toner refresh every 8–12 weeks to keep the tone fresh
• Use heat protection to keep blonde pieces healthy

Frequently asked questions

How often do I need to redo balayage?

Many clients only need a full balayage every few months, with toner refreshes in between.

Can I get balayage on dark hair?

Yes – balayage works beautifully on brunettes, with caramel, honey or ash tones.
